Methods to relieve OCD?Hi. A few years ago, I experienced an event that changed my life and turned me into a germaphobe and was wondering if anyone had any guidelines on how to get better. For example, last night I used a couple hand sanitizer wipes to wash the outside of all of my plastic folders. So today I was sitting in class and realized I put the syllabus inside the folder but did not wash the inside of the folders and thought about that the whole rest of the class and immediately had to wash them after class. It seems like virtually anything I touch, I feel the urge to wash it whether it be folders or my desk, or pretty much anything that other people potentially touch that is mine. So I was wondering if anyone has ideas on how to resist the urge to always clean! Sometimes I can just tell myself there is no need to worry, but I was wondering if other people have methods of resisting the urge to clean the rest of the time when telling myself everything is okay does not work for me.

Re: Methods to relieve OCD?Hey there, ocdgirl, welcome to PF!
You'll find you get responses if you post in the forums themselves, the blogs do get read and some people follow others' blogs, but they are more a journaling tool. Having said that, sometimes I get stuck into checking things, faucets, etc, and for me the best way to stop checking.... is to stop checking. That simple, when it comes to checking things, for me, which I imagine is sort of like a washing compulsion. I get tired of checking and I say Screw It and walk away. If it's on and ruins the upstairs, so be it. If the car is unlocked, or the window is down, fine. Not rechecking it. I take a deep breath and break the compulsive action. You'll get more insight in OCD forum, I invite you to post in there with your concerns.... snaga2.0
