Why Boarding School Messes You Up

Permanent Linkby CrackedGirl on Sat Jan 05, 2013 3:08 pm

I went to boarding school from the age of 9 to 18. I think that whilst there are some good things about boarding such as becoming independent, on the whole it is really damaging to kids. The main problem is that you are there all the time. You dont get to go home at the end of the day to people who unconditionally love you. You are with people who may bully you and people who really dont care about you all the time. The staff of course do not love you so you grow up being surrounded by people who even if they care about you do not put you and your welfare first. There is no room for fun because all the time you are having to follow school rules and the threat of punishment hangs over your head. You can never let loose and lose control. But it is the fact your parent/s leave you there in the first place that I think is the most damaging. You are left thinking that you are not worth anything more than the misery you are being exposed to. That your tears of home sickness are not valid and that your family dont want you. I will never send my kids, should I have them, to boarding school.

Hi Cracked, 9 yrs seems like a terribly young age to put a child into boarding school, I would have been scared as hell to be put into a boarding situation at such a young age. One thing is for sure, our two boys are far two precious to my wife and I to ever do that to them. I hope you get the children you want Cracked as they really are the best thing in life, nothing compares....

Thanks for your thoughts. I was actually home schooled before boarding school when we lived overseas so I guess I have seen both extremes.

Yeah, that sounds like misery and borderline psychological abuse, but considering my own childhood about being thrown outside all the time and told to go away as a child, even when hurt or injured...

But you may have added some details to the background of a character of mine I'm writing upon that I wanted her father to send off to a boarding school after her mother passed away, because he couldn't stand the sight of her anymore (reminded him of his dead wife). Let's just say her life has to suck, so what happens later "makes sense."

Ooops, i'm rambling again, apologies. Thanks for sharing this though. Displaying parts of our past is not always easy >_>
