Starting To Heal

Permanent Linkby CrackedGirl on Mon Nov 26, 2012 11:35 pm

We had a meeting at the cathedral tonight organised by the Bishop to talk about the vote that happened and where to go from here. It was predominantly full of ppl who were in favour of women bishops tho there were those there eager to hammer home their views against - which were received with an awful lot more tolerance than I was expecting, I have to say. There were times when I welled up with what ppl were saying and on the whole, the occasional bigot aside, it was a very healing meeting. We then went onto the pub to debrief and this was hugely useful too - there is something very healing about being with ppl and talking things out. I know there will be women bishops one day and I really hope that day is sooner rather than later as I know some wonderful women who would fit the bill.

Hiya Cracked sorry to hear that this is happening to you. Out of simple curiosity, I know that the vast majority of religions do hold women in a "lesser" role (I strongly disapprove of this) and often the women don't have the same rights or 'powers' as the men do. An example of this are the mormons, women aren't given the 'priesthood' which allows the men to do certain things that they cannot (e.g. give blessings, baptize, bless the sacrement). I have little knowledge of the church you belong to so I in no way mean to disrespect or offend, tell me if I do. I just wanted to know if it is specifically mentioned in the beliefs you hold (religious texts I should say) that women cannot be bishops? If the answer is yes the reason the sexist views were tolerated is most likely because it is a long and (in their eyes) pivotal tradition. It could also be the in the eyes of the men that they would lose a great deal of power.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful reply. I belong to the Anglican church. People against women bishops do quote the Bible to back up what they say but this tends to be out of context. The thing with the Bible in my experience is you can prove that God is telling you anything is right or wrong if you can pick out one specific verse. A lot of the Anglican church is fairly liberal tho this is by no means always the case. But the oppression of women that happens in other churches day to day is not so much of an issue except when it comes to women leading worship as vicars and higher. I think the church is very male centric but that this is changing. Ideas such as God as the midwife are being talked about more and perhaps if this type of thing gets more into day to day talk then things will start to change. Thanks for your thoughts :)

Well I sincerely hope that they change their views for the better soon then, can we expect to here that Cracked will become a bishop herself if and when this happens? ;)
