Manic/Hypomanic

Postby twosidesofthecoin » Wed Mar 14, 2012 4:39 am

Im interested in knowing how others describe the differences in being Manic or Hypomanic. I'm aware of the DSM description and the criteria for diagnosis, but am curious to know personal experiences.
Does any one real know what goes on in the chemistry of our brains?

I think the two things that stand out for me are psychosis and almost complete lack of control.

In hypomania some of my behaviour is poorly controlled like spending and sexual behaviour but overall I am in control of my life. In mania this changes and I no longer am in control and often lack insight too.

I do often get psychotic whilst manic and this does not happen when I am hypomanic.

Those are the 2 main things for me

I only experience hypomania. My experience is usually extreme euphoria, extremely high self-esteem, sociability that I don't normally have, & an increase in energy & productivity. Occasionally I have agitation, anger & the "feeling" that I'm gonna lose control, which is why I went into the hospital last time.

But from my understanding of full-blown mania, I believe it's more of a complete loss of control, opposite to me just "feeling" like a "might" lose control, being manic, you actually are out of control. You have more of a chance of doing things that you will seriously regret, contrary to my hypomania where I still do have some common sense & restraint. Mania you are more prone to a break from reality aka psychosis. Overall - mania is just more dangerous than hypomania.

Just my thoughts.

I am diagnosed bipolar 2 however I have believe I have been manic.

When hypomanic I am full of energy, productive, positive.
When manic I am highly dellutional, and usually believe in magic and think I can create it.
I also get time when I loose time when I am manic. I basically just wake up and it will be three days later I won't remember how I got there.

I have BP2 but recently I'm certain I've been manic. I know hypomanic, I talk and think faster (probably too fast) but I am able to function without too much effort. I usuallly amd very cretive/productive when hypomanic.
