I believe that is the general consensus is that bipolar is genetic. Although there are people who believe life circumstances can either cause BP or at least worsen the condition.

It goes back to the debate of nature vs nurture.

MHO is that BP is genetic. But I also believe that life circumstances can either ease symptoms or exacerbate them. But I don't believe that circumstance can actually cause the disorder.

But BP is such a complicated disorder that we most likely may never know exactly how it works.

My understanding is that yes, it's genetic but has an environmental trigger. Here's an article on it but it's way over my head...

There's pretty much always nature/nurture components but very rarely does bipolar occur without bipolar or schizophrenia in the family. Many people have bipolar genes but never develop the disorder because it doesn't get triggered. Unfortunately we know very little of the genes and what turns them on so the specifics are mostly unknown. In short: yes, bipolar is genetic.

I think it's genetic. The psychiatrist asked me if anyone in my family has bipolar or depression. I really don't know my background very much as my mom and dad are immigrants and myself I don't know much about their families. But I've had mood problems since 18 years.
