zinc? hallucinations? mania?

Postby Lexicon_Devil » Sat Sep 28, 2013 5:47 pm

So I've been taking zinc regularly to try to combat the acne from my lamotrigine for a while now. It hasn't been working well, and it makes me nauseous after taking it, but last night I was so frustrated that I took double the dose without really thinking about it. I spent half the night near the toilet waiting to throw up, and after a short while started getting dizzy. The dizziness got way worse, the nausea persisted, and by the time I got to bed, I was having bad distortionary hallucinations (which I usually only get with mania). I felt detached from reality, like I was in a bad dream, and my partner said I was talking really loud and fast without making much sense.

I know most of this (except the fast thoughts/speech) was caused by the zinc, having done a little research this morning, but I was wondering if anyone had ever had zinc toxicity exacerbate your (hypo)mania? I was tending up without realizing it anyway, the subtle productive sneaky kind, but by the end of the night I was completely freaking out.

(Btw, I normally take 50mg zinc gluconate, which is only 7.15mg elemental zinc I think, and I took 100mg instead, which I obviously won't be trying again.) Help?

Yeah, I checked with her before I started taking the supplement (which I get enough of with food and my multivitamin, just thought it was worth a try adding some for my skin), and she said it was fine. I also researched contraindications beforehand, and it was all good. *sigh* It was just an overdose, I guess. Probs the dizziness and hallucinating just freaked me out when I was already a little up, and thus vulnerable to freak outs generally.

Guess it's time to look at more aggressive skin remedies instead, and/or cut back the lamictal and try something else; I just can't do this acne sh!t anymore. This all just feels like a life sentence to being broke, crazy, AND ugly. Just... ugh.

I've only taken zinc a few times, as immune system support, and I felt nauseous every time, even threw up one time. Maybe some people are sensitive to it? I can't remember what, if any, meds I was on at the time.

I also have some effects of hypo/mania when I get really anxious.
Recovering Addict diagnosed with Bipolar I Disorder
Currently taking:
160mg Geodon/Ziprasidone every night
10mg Ambien/Zolpidem every night
200mg Wellbutrin/Bupropion every morning

When I get some money, I'm gonna buy me some time.

at times, i have taken calcium magnesium zinc suppliments. this and those cold shortening lozenges give a deffinute nausia for the first half hour or so, especially on an empty stomach. having too much of a salt, (the zinc comes in the form of a salt, not metalic zinc.) in your system will naturally cause your body to respond like it is severely dehydrated or heat-stroked. hallucinations are a symptom of this. first aid is to drink a glass of water, avoid caffiene.

the reason i took the suppliments in the first place is because it did in fact contribute to my general feeling of wellbeing. i cannot provide any measurable data on this, only that emperically i find that it sometimes helps. does it cause mania or hypomania? sorry, can't help you on this.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. To clarify, I don't believe it caused (or could cause) mania on its own, but that as I was already tending upward, the distress and strange psychological effects served to greatly exacerbate things. I emailed my pdoc about it, and we basically agreed that it was just an overdose of zinc combined with hypomania, making it appear to be full-blown mania without that actually being the case. Lucky me. :P

Wrt the acne - has you psych suggested anything? A referral to a dermatologist might be helpful to see if anything can be done- often it can

I've tried various treatments now, it's been an exhausting battle. My mother was an aesthetician, so I knew my options pretty well, but at this point we're just going to try dropping the dose to 100mg and starting abilify to pick up the slack (yay trial and error...). wasn't really keeping my mania in check anyway, and 100mg was fine for depression, so... Hopefully there will be some improvement. From what I've read, though, Lamictal acne is different from regular acne, since the med may largely be processed through the skin? So usual treatments can only do so much, it seems...

Sounds difficult. I still wonder if a derm referral might help (my background is anaesthetics and emergency medicine and I dont know the first thing about dermatology - it is a pretty specialised specialty). Hope things improve anyhow

Well zinc is a dopamine re-uptake inhibitor so this may affect you if you are taking meds that interact with zinc or even just in general depending on your biology.
