Anybody taking Latuda as a mood stabilizer?

Postby quietgirl2538 » Thu Feb 21, 2013 2:18 am

If you have how much do you take and what is your experience with it? I am taking 40 mg, it's my second day so I can't say much about it. I switched from Abilify. I stopped taking Pristiq for the depression and am back on Prozac. On a low dosage of 20 mg.

I'm guessing not a lot of bipolar people take Latuda yet (?) I think it is still relatively new, and they are just recently doing trials to approve it for bipolar depression. It has mostly been used for schizophrenia. But my pdoc has mentioned putting me on it (to replace Abilify) because I'm thinking of getting pregnant, and it is a safer drug to be on during pregnancy. I would be interested to hear how it works for you...good luck!!

Thanks MaggieMay78! I did a little bit of research on it and it mostly mentioned schizophrenia. But I specifically requested a mood stabilizer for my depression. One thing, you must take it with meals. It will make you nauseous if you don't. I made the mistake of not eating much and felt so sick with it. But other than that so far my "zombie" feeling seems to be leaving me. I feel lighter in mood and am hoping to "feel" more. I felt so sedated and drugged and sluggish with what I was taking earlier.

My doctor has talked to me about possibly going on latuda, but then I was hospitalized and they put me back on seroquel which seems to be working well so we're sticking with that for now. I agree with Maggiemay, it's still a fairly new drug, and many psychiatrists are not prescribing it for bipolar disorder yet except in rare cases. There have been some people here that I've seen list it, or post about it. I did a quick search just to be sure and there is a few posts about it.

I take Latuda and I like it. I was originally on Risperdal which made me emotionally numb and zapped all my energy to do things like exercise. On Latuda, I still had all the energy I normally have without being medicated. It did mess with my stomach for the first week but after that I havent really noticed any side effects other than that. It also took away pretty much all my anger, which I like and dislike. I almost never get angry before I started it I was angry at everyone lol. Latuda was slower in dealing with my psychosis though, not sure if thats an issue you have. Did nothing for my depression and anxiety. Hope this helps!

Thanks Cheze2 and francois432! I am learning a lot just by your sharing. I looked up the other posts and that adds to any information.

I just found out this morning that I will be starting Latuda, and going off Abilify. As I mentioned before, Latuda is supposedly safer to be on during pregnancy (I say "supposedly" because it is still kind of new, and these things change all the time). I'm not pregnant yet and am trying to plan all this out...really didn't want to be on any meds during pregnancy, but my pdoc is totally against that. So Latuda it is! I will let you know how it works for me. I usually don't get many side effects and am pretty stable now, so I'm guessing it probably won't make a huge difference. We'll see...

Latuda quickly pulled me out of a depression and balanced my mood (noticeable within two weeks or less) BUT..... I was a little aggressive and quick to anger. It made me nauseous all the time and a few times I ended up puking at work. Also, i started locking my jaw and couldn't stop.... Forget what it's called but then my doc had to give me another drug to stop the side effects. I couldn't handle that, so I went off of it after about two months and restarted my old standby- lithium and lamictal. Good luck.

Latuda also quickly pulled me out of the depression and I felt great. I had a couple days with a lot of nausea but it went away. Now I have so much itching all over my body so I stopped taking it and see if it was that that caused it. If not I'll come back to it. For now I'm taking Saphris.
